Integrating Primary Care and Behavioral Health Service Delivery ECHO

The HRSA Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Technical Assistance (COE for BHTA) presents the virtual clinical case conferencing series, Integrating Primary Care and Behavioral Health Service Delivery ECHO. To foster real-time information sharing among health center staff and expert professionals, the COE for BHTA is using Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes). This e-consultation service allows a wide range of professionals to present patient cases to receive clinical feedback and assistance on treatment strategies from specialists and experienced peers around the country, all without traveling.


The Integrating Primary Care and Behavioral Health ECHO introduces care integration, details best practices of patient-centered care; it addresses a variety of substance use disorder, behavioral health, and responsive care topics in the context of primary care settings. This ECHO will help participants to better understand a patient’s needs, effectively collaborate to achieve patient goals, and build professional knowledge on a wide range of primary care and behavioral health topics. 

The ECHO meets Tuesdays from 3:30–5:00 p.m. ET with a follow-up Extended Session on Thursdays 3:30–4:00 p.m. ET. The sessions are organized into four modules. Following each module, we will also hold a recap webinar, which will be split into two separate one-hour slots on the final Thursday of the module. We will conclude with a facilitated one-hour debrief session to elicit your feedback. At this time, this opportunity is only available to Bureau of Primary Health Care funded health centers.

ECHO Debrief Session August 7, 2020, 11 a.m.–12 p.m. ET

How does it work? ECHO sessions are open to any interested professional (physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, addiction counselors, recovery support specialists, case managers, community health workers, service navigators, and administration staff). ECHO uses a “hub and spoke” model. Participant programs (spokes) log in to each weekly session, joining other spokes across the U.S. The “hub” team manages technology and facilitates discussion, both verbal and written. 


ECHO sessions are scheduled weekly March to July 2020, skipping major holiday weeks. Each session is 90 minutes and includes a brief didactic presentation, 13 case presentations, and resource sharing. We also offer a 30-minute ECHO Extended session for follow-up consultation, in-depth discussions of didactic topics, and facilitated peer sharing and skill development. We encourage you to attend all clinic sessions and present cases for maximum benefit.


Didactic presentation topics are announced in advance and organized into modules. Didactics are presented by specialists on the announced topic and designed to increase your knowledge of key foundational areas. While many didactic topics are clinical in nature, some are related to process improvements and health center best practices. 


Cases are submitted by participants at health centers (spokes) and are not announced in advance. Cases may or may not match the topic of a given week’s didactic since they are based on the immediate, real-time needs of the participants and their patients. Any participating individual or team can present a case and receive clinical support from the hub team and from other spokes.  An experienced ECHO facilitator will guide case discussions through the initial presentation by the spoke by clarifying questions from the group, sharing suggestions, and summarizing recommendations. 


How do I participate? This event has limited space, and registration is first come, first served. As a participant, all you need is an internet-connected computer and a phone or VOIP microphone. You will receive a confirmation of your entry into ECHO with additional detail on guidelines for participation and how to submit case presentations.
